In my work for the scholarship exhibition a room that…., I examine my relationship with sculpture. Stone is a symbol of the eternal, the monumental, and is the ultimate art material. Its power has been central to the work of a great many artists in the past, the majority of them male, as I remember. In this work, I play with the meaning of stone as power and seek my own way of handling it appropriately: a wall papered in colourful sheets of paper with water-soluble marbling, a found marble-veneer table dismantled and positioned randomly in the space, small clay sculptures resting on gypsum concrete blocks and, on the wall, a black-and-white photocopy from the library.
